EcoClean's professional service technicians provide different levels of inspections, according to The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Inspections are classified as Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3.
If your current appliance or venting system has not changed and you plan to use it as you have in the past, then a Level 1 inspection is a minimum requirement.
A Level 1 inspection is recommended for a chimney under continued service, under the same conditions, and with the continued use of gas or wood burning fireplace.
In a Level 1 inspection, EcoClean chimney service technicians will examine the readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior, interior, and accessible portions of the fireplace and chimney. EcoClean technicians will be looking for the basic structural integrity of the chimney structure and flue, as well as the basic fireplace installation and connections. EcoClean technicians will also verify that the chimney is free of obstructions and combustible deposits.
A Level 2 inspection is required when any changes are made to the system. Changes can include: a change in the fuel type, changes to the shape of, or material in, the flue (i.e. relining), or the replacement/addition of an appliance of a dissimilar type, and input rating or efficiency. Additionally, a Level 2 inspection is required upon the sale or transfer of a property or after an operation malfunction or external event, that is likely to have caused damage to the chimney. Building fires, chimney fires, and weather events are all indicators that this level of inspection is warranted. A Level 2 inspection is a more in-depth inspection than a Level 1 inspection.
A Level 3 inspection includes all the areas and items checked in a Level 1 and Level 2 inspection, as well as the removal of certain components of the building or chimney where necessary. Removal of components (i.e., chimney crown or interior chimney wall) shall be required only when necessary to gain access to areas that are the subject of the inspection. When serious hazards are suspected, a Level 3 inspection may very well be required to determine the condition of the chimney system.
Each level of inspection requires different time taken by the technicians to preform the inspection and the cost will vary according to the level of inspection needed. Annual chimney inspections are a must for those that use their chimney on a regular basis. Inspections allow certified chimney technicians to find problems and issues with a chimney that regular chimney sweeps will not find. Without proper annual inspections, issues may go unnoticed and in turn create a hazard for the home owner or create costly repairs down the road.
The biggest benefit to having a chimney inspected annual, is that it gives the homeowner the piece of mind of knowing that his or her family is safe, when operting the fireplace or appliance. The second biggest benefit to having your chimney inspected is that many times EcoClean technicians will catch problems early and in turn repair the issue for a fraction of the cost of future repairs, had the problem gone unnoticed.
